What is a syndet?

A syndet, or soap-free cleanser, is a product formulated with various mild synthetic surfactants (cleaning agents) instead of traditional soap. This technology gives it specific properties for skin hygiene. The term "syndet" is short for synthetic detergent.

What are the benefits of a syndet for skin hygiene ?

To remain healthy, skin must be clean and free of impurities. But it must also maintain its protective skin barrier (or hydrolipidic film), its natural microbiota, and its slightly acidic pH of 5.5¹.

With a pH of 7 to 11, conventional soaps are generally alkaline. Alkalinity is chemically the opposite of acidity. By reducing the skin's natural acidity, conventional soaps are degreasing, which can disrupt the skin's hydrolipidic film.¹‧² A syndet has a pH close to that of the skin, around 5.5. It respects the skin's hydration and natural barrier function. It is therefore less irritating and better tolerated, especially by sensitive, dry, or acne-prone skin.²

Thus, a syndet effectively cleanses the skin while preserving the epidermis's balance.

What are the benefits of a syndet for acne-prone skin ?

Syndets can be formulated with several surfactants, each with a different action on the skin, depending on the desired effect.

A syndet made with gentle, cleansing surfactants cleanses, purifies, and rebalances the skin while reducing the risk of skin irritation. Plant-based active ingredients known for their beneficial effects on blemish-prone skin (sebum-regulating, repairing, etc.) can be incorporated into the formulation to optimize its benefits.

By leaving the skin clean and free of excess sebum, cleansing with a syndet prepares acne-prone skin to receive targeted skincare products. The penetration of the active ingredients in these products will be enhanced.
